Abnormal Vaginal Bleeding

STRUCTURAL AND NON-STRUCTURAL ABNORMALITIES

Many women experience abnormal vaginal bleeding or spotting between periods at some time in their lives. Vaginal bleeding is considered to be abnormal when it occurs:

  • When you are not expecting your menstrual period
  • When your menstrual flow is lighter or heavier than what is normal for you
  • When it is not expected—such as before age 9, when you are pregnant, or after menopause

WHAT CAUSES ABNORMAL UTERINE BLEEDING?

There are many causes of abnormal uterine bleeding. Structural abnormalities in the uterus can be one. This can take the form of fibroids, which are benign overgrowth of the muscle of the uterus. Polyps, which are benign overgrowths of the lining of the uterus or on the cervix, can also be another. Uterine cancer or cervical cancer is an important cause as well.

There are also non-structural causes of abnormal uterine bleeding. Bleeding disorders or platelet dysfunction can cause abnormal bleeding. Early pregnancies can have some bleeding associated with them and hormonal changes can also be a cause.
